Discover wild camping

Take your first steps into wild camping on a relaxed and fun overnight trip. As well as having a mini-adventure, we’ll cover all of the essential skills from campsite selection and managing your kit to staying comfortable, safe and responsible in the mountains.

You might be completely new to camping, or wanting to refine your skills for multi-day treks. Either way you’ll gain knowledge and confidence to enjoy nights under the stars in the UK hills, and on bigger journeys further afield.

At home in the hills

There’s nothing quite like settling down in your tent feeling safe and at home, or watching the first glow of dawn spreading across the fells. Wild camping gives you a deeper connection to the landscape. It’s about slowing down, feeling small in the best way possible and finding your own rhythm in wild places.

But it can also feel daunting if you’re unsure of where to start. Questions about access laws, safety or what to pack often put people off before they’ve even tried. This experience is all about making those first steps simple, safe and enjoyable. The aim is to give you the confidence to head out on your own adventures, whether that’s a night in the Lake District or on a multi-day journey through the Alps.

Who it’s for

These overnight trips are ideal for anyone new to wild camping or for walkers who want to build their confidence when spending nights in the hills. You don’t need any prior camping experience - just basic hill fitness, a sense of adventure and a willingness to learn. Essential kit can be provided on request.

If you’ve ever dreamt of backpacking in the Scottish Highlands or making your first hut-to-hut trek, this could be the perfect foundation.

What you’ll learn

You’ll gain the knowledge and practical skills to plan and enjoy your own wild camping trips, with a focus on low-impact, responsible travel. During our time together, we’ll cover:

  • How to plan a route and select a good campsite whilst factoring in the weather and terrain

  • Understanding access laws and the ethics of Leave No Trace

  • Lightweight camping kit: what to pack (and what to leave behind)

  • Adapting pitching techniques and camp setup for comfort and safety

  • Sourcing and treating water

  • Managing bad weather, keeping warm and feeling safe

  • Navigation refresher, integrating map, compass, and GPS use

  • Bivvy and tarp camping options for those who want to go lighter

Along the way, I’ll share insights from my own long-distance backpacking journeys across mountain ranges in the UK and abroad. The skills you’ll learn can open the door to much bigger playgrounds like the Alps or the Caucasus Mountains.

What to expect

We’ll meet in the afternoon for a short walk into the hills, where we’ll talk about how to read the landscape and the map to identify suitable camp spots. Then we’ll prepare for a night on the hill. As the sun sets, you’ll have a chance to put everything into practice - pitching your tent or bivvy shelter, cooking up dinner and settling into the rhythm of your surroundings.

In the morning over coffee and (hopefully!) a nice sunrise, we’ll look at how to break camp responsibly, navigate off the hill and plan your next adventure.

I aim to make these trips as relaxed and flexible as possible - depending on our location, we might be able to access some remote locations that only campers can enjoy. Wild camping can also present some unforgettable opportunities for spotting wildlife.
