Guided experiences and mountain skills in the UK

Whether you’re looking to learn how to navigate; wild camp or just have an adventurous day out in the hills, my private guiding days are designed around you.

Each session is one-to-one or for a small group. We can cover skills like using a map and compass; moving confidently on steep terrain and preparing for a long-distance walk. I also offer guided walks or fell running days across the Lake District and further afield.

Hopefully you’ll come away with lots of new skills and the confidence to plan your own bigger adventures, whether that’s a weekend in the Lake District or backpacking in the Alps.

Learn essential map, compass and GPS skills; route-planning and navigation confidence for hill days in any weather. (1 day)

Experience how to plan, pitch and sleep out responsibly and safely in the UK hills or overseas. Kit can be provided. (2 days)

Experience a longer mountain adventure whilst learning how to look after yourself on multi-day journeys. (2-4 days)

Friendly and inclusive guided running adventures, exploring the Lakeland fells at a relaxed pace. (1 day)

Learn safe movement techniques for rocky, pathless and mixed ground, bridging the gap between hillwalking and scrambling. (1 day)

Tailored one-to-one or small group days focussed on your specific goals, from mountain challenges to pre-expedition training.

Why me?

It wasn’t so long ago that I’d never even seen a mountain in real life, let alone climbed one! But after over a decade of getting out there and walking for many thousands of miles, I’ve been rewarded with so many unforgettable experiences. I’ve also learnt a lot about myself along the way. Now the mountains feel like home.

The thing I value most about guiding is helping other people to find this same sense of freedom and independence in the outdoors for themselves. I want people to realise that they belong when they’re outside. We’re all part of nature and we’re all capable of much more than we probably think we are. Things like age, background or circumstances don’t really matter.

As well as being a professionally-qualified International Mountain Leader, I also have years of personal experience backpacking across mountain ranges throughout the UK; the Alps, the Balkans and the Greater Caucasus. I like to think that this international perspective shapes how I teach back at home too: helping you learn how to travel with freedom, wherever you might want to go. That could be a weekend in the Peak District, or on a future trip across the Pyrenees.

Who I teach

I work with people who are looking to build their confidence in the hills. You might think of yourself as a total beginner, or an experienced walker looking to take your first step into multi-day hiking. Whatever your background, you’re more than welcome to reach out to me.

You don’t need to be super-fit or have all the latest gear. As long as you’re willing to give it a go, we can find out what works best for you. I’ll do my best to meet you wherever you are and facilitate some memorable adventures in the hills.

Where you’ll find me

Most of my guiding takes place in the Lake District, but we can also visit some of the UK’s other mountain areas, like Eryri in Wales; the Highlands and the Yorkshire Dales. These are all ideal places for practicing navigation, movement skills and lightweight backpacking.

Often, people contact me because they’re preparing for bigger trips like the Tour du Mont Blanc, the Pennine Way or the Alta Via trails. It can be a massive help to build your confidence by working on some key skills closer to home first.
